Yes, sheep are very protective of their offspring, like all mammalian mothers, usually caring for their young for just over a year.

Hi Watusa,..Among mammals. that have hooves & horns,such as sheep, there are more females born than males,,..& during the mating season, the males compete, through, non-lethal, physical, combat, for the”possession” of as many females as he can “handle”,..& at all times, other than the mating season, the males have no interest in the females, nor do they take any interest in the young lambs… Among “wild” sheep, the males remain separate from the females & the lambs except during the mating season,..The females, do, however raise their young, in that , being “mammals”, they need to nurse their young, during the first few months of life, that is, until the the young grow teeth & can eat vegetation..Sheep are born in the spring, & by fall, they are , fully grown,..They are only dependent on their mothers, for the first 2 or 3 months of life ,..If a female sheep dies, in the process of giving birth, the sheep rancher can often get another female to adopt the orphans,..to nurse,..
