BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Head, Neck and Thoracic Surgery

Let me just start by saying that I still haven’t digested this book completely so my opinion mostly reflects my first impression. BSAVA books are usually excellent (although a bit expensive compared to others), and this one is not an exception. However, it’s pretty thin for head, neck and thoracic surgery book, meaning there’s no so much details as I expected. The text itself is pretty good and not as sterile as in other surgery books, but I expected much more photos and pictures of different procedures, mostly because the margin of error in there areas is extremely small.
For example,VECA procedure is only decribed in words without any photo, and that procedure can produce some serious side effects(if not done correctly). Also, bulla osteotomy is not shown. Parathyroidectomy-not shown. Median sternotomy-not shown.Pericardectomy-not shown.Diaphragmatic hernia is usually easy to repair, but can be difficult in chronic cases- photos of different patching procedures would be an excellent addition to this book. On the other hand, lateralization for laryngeal paralysis in shown quite nicely.
All in all, it’s nice addition to every vet’s bookshelf, but the book with this title and these respected authors should have been better.
