I had a Miniature Dachshund named Oscar for 17 years. That dog absolutely loved tennis balls. You could hit a tennis ball as far down deep in the woods as you could with a baseball bat, and he would take off running like a bad outa’ hell and go find it and bring it back within 5 minutes. They are the greatest dogs, I’ll get another some day.
I wouldn’t agree with the simple statement that if you “keep your dachshund lean and muscular, you will never have a problem with paralysis.” Diet and exercise are just part of the overall equation.

DON’T breed your dog… adopt from a shelter. Shelters are full of pure bred dogs. People are irresponsible and get rid of puppies after they stop being ‘kyoot’.
