Help me find out what is wrong with my dog. My dog is having health issues and nobody seems to know what is going on with him. I have talked to a few vets and had blood work done to no avail. Both vets said it doesn’t seem like a seizure, and blood tests have ruled out Addison’s Disease. The symptoms are this: His body begins trembling very violently almost like a muscle spasm. The trembling continues to worsen until he usually begins to pant very deeply. During this episode his ears go up and back while his eyes widen. He seems to be very uncomfortable during this and has a tendency to want to go hide somewhere or burrow under a blanket or pillow. Generally, if he is left alone and not excited in any way, the trembling and/or panting will fade away in 5 or 10 minutes. The episodes, however, seem to be getting more frequent. If you have any idea what is wrong with him, please email me.
please look at my videos of my dog — vets are having trouble diagnosing her spasm/seizure condition.
hey did you figure out what he has my 2 year old pom ys having exactly the same thing. and i am concerned about it… dont know if it will get worse… if you know what it is please let me know thanks…
hey i know wat this is its very comun in rat terriers its a ginetick thing and my rat terrier does it alot more violant to the point where she is flopping around on the floor running in to walls foaming at the mouth and the best thing to do is try to calm her or him down i rap my dog in a towel and hold her for a wile and then shes better scientists have reaserched that it is normal for these dogs and its not a big problem until they get very old and weak dont worry
my dog does this but she is very old
My dog just started to do that too. I’m thinking it’s because she’s afraid of the fireworks. I’m currently sitting in the car where it’s quiet and watching her sleep peacefully. So she was probably just in shock.
hey , I am a vet . in my opinion if your dog has good general condition this muscle fasiculation(spasm) is because of hyperkalemia or excess potassium of blood, when your dog has these symptoms check it (blood test),usually IV dextrouse and calcium provide immidiate imporovement.
good luck
maooley, how is your dog now?
CECS!
I had a puppy that would tremble even worse than that. The vet told me to give him a little dark corn syrup (like Karo) because it was probably a sign of low blood sugar. I did it, and he stopped shaking! Try giving your dog only about a teaspoon of dark corn syrup. If he stops trembling, you know it’s low blood sugar, and that’s completely controllable.
My dog does the exact same thing. Shaking, heavy panting, and tries to hide under the bed. This seems to be related to location as he only does it at my mother in laws house. He has similar coloration as your dog. I am very interested in if you found any reason for it. I think that it may be related to chemicals that she uses to clean, but I am unsure.
Back problems are common with this breed as my lil Rat TErrier Rico did the same thing.
My Yorkie is also having problems with tremors. Evaluate meds he may be on. my dog Sadie was on Reglan for nausea and it effected her Central Nervous System. She also has kd, pancreatitis, IBD and possibly heart issues. You dog looks to me like he is having “muscle spasms” which as you know can be painful for us humans. maybe your vet can give a muscle relaxer as a trial run and see if it helps.
dont worry my little dog shakes when shes cold and when scared, i dont think this is anything serious as im a vet and i own a kennels so i know the most about dogs. dont build your hopes up that he will survive but i give you good luck xx
My grandad has that dog. is it a jackabee?
Anyway my grandads dog does that because he had an abusive history from old owners. does your dog have a history of that?
I’m thinking he may have some inner ear thing going on. The rear end trembling is where they always tremble when something is wrong, it may or may not be hurting back there. How is he now? I notice it’s been quite a while since you posted this. I’m looking for an answer for my dogs problem, I think mine’s got Addison’s.
lilstewy86, my dog does this same thing… It has happened twice now. Not 100% sure, but it would make sense if it was just the after-effects of a seizure, like you said. he is most likely a flat-coated-retriever/border collie mix.
One of my dogs had something like this where her neck was very sensitive and she panted more often than normal. Our vet also did not have any concrete conclusions (and I work for her, so I know that she knows her stuff), but we were able to use a different collar when walking her to relieve the pain.
I hope he gets better!
my dog does this we think its just a panic attack thats it
… from your video, it looks like that residual effect after the initial disturbance. This may last for a while. There is some agreement among professionals that each seizure makes the dog more likely to have another, possibly worse one in the future. The primary treatment, phenobarbitol, has its own slieu of side effects, but the general agreement is that if this is happening more than once a month, treatment should be considered… Hope that sheds some light!
…human seizures to be. In fact, the actual seizure itself may only last for a few moments in the beginning. The dog might run around really fast, fall, yelp, or paddle his arms, and probably try to hide. Then there is a period after this that the dog’s neural network is essentially in a small state of shock. The dog sits quietly and tremors violently, looks very disconnected, maybe drools. While the system slowly works itself back to normal, the dog is scared and confused. From your video,…
Hey there,
From the description you wrote in the beginning, it really sounds like a seizure. Rat terriers have a propensity toward seizure disorder. I have a rat terrier who suddenly started having seizures about once a month. It was hard to diagnose at first because these seizures are not what you would imagine a seizure to look like. A canine “grand mal” or whole body seizure is not quite as violent and disconnected as movies and television portray human seizures to be…. TBC
Hi there, im from Argentina.
My dog is shaking the same way, mostly his back foots. I also noticed that he wont sit down “like a dog”, he starts trembling a lot while he starts, and then he just lay down on the floor.
He obviously have no bruises or anything like that.
Is your dog sitting normally?
The fact that he´s trying to hide under the pillow might mean something traumatic going on… but that´s just a guess… good luck!
Well, he’s a cute dog .
Is he like a rat terrier? Becuase I have a rat terrier that looks almost exactly like that just lighter coloring, and she has some problems like that, too.
But her front legs go out and she shakes terribly.
we’ve been to vets, too/. and blood tests had came out okay.
my mom did some research online and it’s said some problems come from head trama or something like that.
I’m also trying to figure out the same thing, so good luck.
